Harmer-Rabada Duo Seal Historic Series Win for South Africa, Australia Lose by 176 Runs
CAPE TOWN: At the historic Newlands ground, South Africa produced a stunning 176-run victory over Australia in the deciding Test to clinch the series 2-1. The biggest contribution came from off-spinner Simon Harmer, who took 6 for 16 in 21.1 overs in the second innings and completed his maiden ten-wicket haul in Test cricket with match figures of 10/120. But the foundation of this win was laid by fast bowler Kagiso Rabada, who tore through Australia's top order on the final morning.
On the fourth day, Harmer had told SEN Cricket that a lead of 120 would be "defendable", 150 would be "par" and anything over 200 would be "gold". His prediction proved prophetic. South Africa set Australia a target of 288, but the visitors were bowled out for 111, finishing nine runs short of even the "defendable" total Harmer had estimated.
At the start of the match, South Africa batted first and posted 329, with all three top-order batters scoring half-centuries. Aiden Markram, Marques Ackerman and David Bedingham made fifties to give their team a competitive total. In reply, Australia piled up 429, with Josh Inglis scoring a century and Alex Carey making a patient 80 off 168 balls. Australia thus gained a 100-run first-innings lead.
In the second innings, the hosts were reeling at 95 for three at one stage. But Ryan Rickelton and Wiaan Mulder came to the rescue. Rickelton made 101 off 219 balls, while Mulder scored 115 off 221 balls. Their partnership set up a thrilling final day. South Africa set Australia a target of 288, and many considered Australia favourites based on their first-innings performance.
But Kagiso Rabada had other ideas. On the final morning, he dismissed Matt Renshaw and Marnus Labuschagne in his very first over. Travis Head followed soon after. This deadly start by Rabada rattled the Australian batting and gave Harmer the chance to prove his prediction right.
Harmer's bowling was relentlessly on one length, and he tested the Australian batters' defensive technique with subtle variations in flight and pace. His accuracy and patience dismantled Australia's middle and lower order. His performance was proof of how the right combination of strategy and execution can change the course of a match.
Speaking after receiving the Player of the Match award, Harmer said, "The wickets haven't offered much turn as expected on days four and five. I ask myself if I have bowled well enough. In PE (2nd Test), I was desperate for wickets. I try to bowl with control in the first innings and exploit and take wickets in the second. Was nice to just bowl freely and try to do your thing." He also emphasised that Rabada's role in South Africa's win cannot be ignored.
This win was special for South Africa in many ways. Despite trailing by 100 runs in the first innings, the team fought back and won the series-deciding match. Rabada completed 350 Test wickets in this match, overtaking Dale Steyn to become the fastest to 350 wickets. Meanwhile, Harmer's spin presented a challenge that the Australian batters had no answer to.
The Newlands pitch offered less help to spinners than expected on days four and five, but Harmer's consistency and Rabada's early success combined to demolish Australia's batting order. This series win for South Africa is a prime example of the importance of bowling in Test cricket and of adopting an aggressive strategy at the right time. For Australia, this loss was certainly disappointing, as they failed to handle the pressure on the final day despite being in a strong position after the first innings.
With this win, South Africa not only clinched the series but also proved how lethal their bowling attack can be in home conditions. Harmer's ten wickets and Rabada's early destruction together wrote the story of this match. For Australia, this series loss is a lesson that no lead in Test cricket can be considered safe until the final moments.
